James Shaw was born in West Babylon, NY. He received his Bachelor's degree in music composition from the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University where he studied with Andrew Waggoner, Daniel Godfrey, Sally Lamb, and electronic music and composition with Nicolas Scherzinger.
While at Syracuse, James performed regularly in the Contemporary Music and Improvisation Ensemble and sang Bass/Baritone in The Syracuse University Singers, Hendricks Chapel Choir, Syracuse Oratorio Society, and Opera Workshop. He is also a member of the national music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda, and took part in the reactivation of the Theta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha.
James is currently working on new chamber and choral music and plans to pursue a graduate degree in music in the near future. When not working on new music, he engraves music for Laurendale Associates, a publisher of choral music based in California. He also freelances as a web and graphic designer for musicians, artists, and publishers.
